The 2015 vintage followed a generally benign winter despite temperatures dropping to near 0 degrees in early January and again in late February. Abundant rain in May and June kept us busy with disease control and canopy management. Starting in July we experienced cool and dry conditions until the arrival of Hurricane Joaquin in early October. Although the timing was unfortunate, the low temperatures during the storm limited excessive moisture damage. Following the rains, a few dry days in the vineyard allowed us to resume a beautiful harvest through the end of a very pleasant October.
After being sorted in the vineyard, our grapes are sorted twice more in the winery. First before being destemmed and then again afterwards. Depending on the grape variety, maceration will last as long as two months before being gently pressed off the skins. Malolactic conversion occurs in barrel. In April following the harvest, the different varieties will be blended and returned to barrel for additional aging. The wine will spend a total of 18 months in French oak, with 45% of the barrels being new.
